After harvesting, Trees for Kenya identified a key challenge: many farmers struggle to manage their produce effectively. Through our Farmer Field School, we train them in processing, packaging, and marketing so that they can add value to their farm products and improve their incomes.
Using simple structures and affordable machines and tools, we teach farmers how to extend the shelf life of their produce, access better market prices, and contribute to food security. These practical lessons help them reduce losses after harvest and turn raw produce into marketable products.
For example, dried cassava and arrow roots are milled into flour, while a honey extractor is used to separate pure honey from the combs, which are then used to make wax. Dehydrators are used to crisp mango slices and dry other products, and fish is also processed into a variety of products. The finished products are then packaged and prepared for marketing.
