Trees for Kenya field staff have been training farmers on best agricultural practices and agroforestry models. Based on field assessments, the need to establish a demonstration farm was identified so that farmers can learn these models through both theory and practice.
The demonstration farm now features an integrated agroforestry system that combines tree planting with crop production. It includes live fencing, a woodlot, contour-planted trees, fruit orchards, and designated areas for crop and vegetable production.
The farm supports a wide range of crops, including maize, beans, coffee, sweet potatoes, arrowroots, cowpeas, cassava, sugarcane, and yams. It also produces fruits such as citrus, dragon fruit, passion fruit, pomegranates, apples, grapes, bananas, mangoes, avocados, pawpaw, tree tomato, guava, and macadamia.
Additional features include vertical gardens for space and water efficiency, erosion-control structures such as gabions and terraces, soil-stabilizing grasses, organic manure application, water harvesting and storage tanks, and a riparian section for water buffering and wetland management.
