Forest Rehabilitation

Trees for Kenya work with communities living adjacent forest in establishment of nurseries where different species of tree seedlings are raised and planted in forest lands. Our organization also carry out sensitization workshop aimed at enlightening communities on importance of reporting any illegal activities taking place inside the forest. Communities living adjacent forest accrue so many benefits from forest which include; cut and carry of fodder leaves, collection of fallen fuelwood for cooking, harvesting fruits and honey collection.

Our organization purchase seedlings from the communities nurseries and engage those community member’s to plant them in the forest and also management through weeding.

Schools Fruit Orchard

Trees for Kenya is introducing food forest projects in  Kenyan schools . This project is aimed at providing school kids with fruits through out the year. Different fruit tree species are selected especially which gives fruits from January to December.You can help in facilitating in creation of food forest in schools. You can donate to plant whole food forest in a school or by donate a fruit tree to be planted in the project.

SCHOOL GREENING

Trees for Kenya work with schools across the country nurturing them to grow as environmentalist. Our organization supports planting of trees in schools with schools pupils. Different tree species are supplied in schools and planted by pupils and teachers. The pupils manage the seedlings through protection from animals, weeding and watering.

BENEFITS OF PLANTING TREES IN SCHOOLS

  • Provide shade to school pupils
  • Provide fresh air to pupil while they learn
  • Offset carbon for schools
  • Protect schools buildings and classrooms from strong winds
  • Nurture young people to grow protecting their environment

HOW CAN YOU HELP

You can support young people plant trees in their school compounds and back at home. Trees for Kenya target to plant 500,000 trees within schools in a duration of three years. Your can be part of this ambitious project which nurture young pupils into tree planting activities.

FODDER TREES

Trees for Kenya work with farmers from Meru,Tharaka Nithi and Embu Counties to plant fodder trees for livestock development. The fodder leaves improve milk production from 45% to 65% and meat production from 25% to 40%. The fodder trees have high nutrition values to livestock compared to other nappier grass commonly used by farmers. Large herds of cattle are contributing to climate change through production of methane gas and thus importance of keeping small herds of cattle which are productive.

IMPORTANCE OF FODDER TREES

  • Provide hight nutritional value to animals;
  • Improve milk and meat production;
  • Can be dried and fed during dry seasons
  • fix nitrogen to farms
  • Can be planted along hedges and occupy small pieces of lands.

HOW CAN YOU  HELP

You can support dairy farmers to plant fodder trees to improve their milk and meat production. As an organization, we are targeting to plant 1000,000 fodder trees within a duration of 3 years.

CONSERVATION STOVES

To reduce emission of black carbon which is generated by communities through use of open fire cooking or three stone fire place. Trees for Kenya work with communities by supplying them with energy conservation stoves which are efficient in terms of wood usage. Currently over 2000 community members have benefited from the project after receiving the stoves. Open fire cooking which is adopted by over 75% of Kenya households consumes thousands of tonnes of wood each day. High demands of wood for cooking contribute to deforestation and desertification as hectares and hectares of forest lands are cleared of trees.

BENEFITS OF ENERGY CONSERVATION STOVES

  • Decrease wood usage by 80% since the stoves consumes less wood compared to open fire cooking;
  • Reduce respiratory diseases such as cancer, severe coughing and running eyes among children and women’s;
  • Reduce deforestation and desertification;
  • Reduce emission of black carbon into the atmosphere;

HOW YOU CAN  HELP

You can help by supporting a households to acquire energy conservation stove. The beneficiaries of the stoves plant 10 trees on their farms. You can choose to offset your carbon by sponsoring an energy conservation stove and in return you get 10 trees planted on your behalf.

FOOD FOREST
